Performances
to be staged inside
The Romanov Chapel
The gilded opulence
of The Romanov Chapel at Luton Hoo offers the perfect setting for these
fully staged productions of La Traviata and Eugene Onegin. The grandeur
of this historically important house has not been comprised now that it
is transformed into a luxury 5 star hotel. Once visited by the likes of
Churchill, the house as we see it today was originally built for Lord
Bute in the 18th century by the great neo classical architect Robert Smirke,
who also designed the National Gallery in London.
In 1903 the owner's son
married the Russian heiress Anastasia Romanov, a member of the former
Russian Imperial family, who was known as 'Lady Zia'. She brought to the
house a collection of Russian artifacts and was instrumental in the design
of the Romanov Chapel, which provides the perfect setting for Candlelight
Opera's performances. The magnificence and peaceful atmosphere of the
Mansion House at Luton Hoo belie its convenient location just three miles
from Junction 10 of the M1 |
